Tonight's HW - 4/23/10

Hello, G8'ers:

Here's tonight's HW.

Based on the lectures you listened to, the videos you watched, and the documents you examined, answer the following question in a blog post of at least 50 words.

Do you believe that the United States has the right to intervene (get involved) in the affairs of another country? In other words, can the United States send troops into another country? Does the US have the right to be the "international police officer?"

In addition to posting your own response, you must write a brief reaction to someone else's post, indicating whether you agree or disagree with that person's position; please state why you agree or disagree.

  1. I think we do have the right but we can't abuse that right. If the country ask us to intervene than we can help them in what they need help in. For example if China got into a war with Japan and they asked us for help than we should help them but if they didn't ask for help than we shouldn't intervene because than we would be losing our men in a battle that isn't ours. Also since if we helped China than we would have an ally to help us with our needs.

  2. I believe the United States has the right to intervene if the country needs help. The United States is a stronger country and is able to help other countries that are less powerful. European countries threatened the weaker countries. For example Cuba wanted their independence from Spain and they US did not like the Spanish policies in Cuba. The US fought for peace and to protect their interests. The US wanted to help Cuba become successful.

I agree with Michele because then the US would have countries that would help us if we need help.

  3. I believe the US does have the right to interfere with other countries, but only under certain circumstatnces. If a country is killing innocent people, has a dictator, or has a communist government, we should help. The only other time the US should interfere with other countries is if we are threatened. For example, Iraq threatened the US so we went in and tried to correct it. The US cannot be the "International Police Officer". We cannot do this because we will become a terrorism target, and we will kill troops in battles and wars that should not have been fought in the first place.

I agree with Michael because then we could use Cuba as an ally, and maybe for trade and its natural resources.

  4. I think that the US abused its power that we can intervine with other countries. Its like they wanted to take overn the whole world. We only should intervine when our ally need help in time of war or resorces. Such as Spanish American war when we got cuba their independence. They took over Latin America because of it's position, natural resources and because the Panama Canal was there. Most of the contries that the US took control over such as Philpines, Guam those contries wanted to get there inpendence by going to war with the US.

I agree with Michele because the US should only should only help not take over because then they wouldn't have any ally and when we need help we wont get any.

  5. I think that we have the right to go to another country because if they need our help then we would go and help them and I also think that if we didnt have the right to go to another country and help then that country would be in major trouble because we wouldnt have the right to go to the country.

  6. I don’t believe that the U.S has the right to intervene in the affairs of another country. This is because if the problem happening does not involve the U.S, they do not have any reason to go and try to fix the problem. It really isn’t the United States choice whether or not an issue is big enough for them to get involve in. The personnel that does have the choice whether or not the U.S should get involve is the country that the problem is happening to. That is the only time the United Sates has a right to get involved in another countries affairs…when they are asked by another country for help. In other words, if the United States does not receive a cry for help, they do NOT have a right to just choose which problems they should get involve with and which they should not.

I disagree and agree with Robert’s comment, I agree with the comment because if the U.S gets threatened, then they do have the right to get involved since they were already involved and it was now part of their problems. I disagree with Robert’s comment because even if that country is having dictatorship problems, a communist government, etc… they did not ask the U.S to help them. If they were really having that hard of problems, they would have already asked for help… but in this case, they didn’t even ask or give a hint that help was needed. If the U.S gets involved in every single little problem in the world, then it’s possible that a World War III could break out.

  7. I believe that the United States sometimes should not get involved with other countries problems. I feel if it has to do with us then it is okay. Many times we get in the middle of other countries battles and we end up losing our own troops. Also other countries don't like us because we get involved in things that may not even affect us. Which makes them hate us and want to harm our country.

I agree with Michelle's comment because I feel the same as her that the United Sates should not get involved if they have nothing to do with it.
